Now that I’ve put up the decorations, baked cookies, made soup, and finished my holiday shopping, what’s left to do while staying at home this holiday season?

I’m thinking of doing my own Classic Christmas Film Festival and screen five of my favorite holiday feel-good movies in one or two days next weekend. Here they are, in no particular order:

1. “It’s a Wonderful Life” (1946) directed by Frank Capra starring Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed. Story of an angel sent from heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. THE classic Christmas movie.

Favorite scene: When everyone comes to George’s house on Christmas Eve to help him out. Memorable quote: “Every time you hear a bell ring, it means that some angel’s just got his wings.”

2. “Miracle on 44th Street” (1947) directed by George Seaton starring Natalie Wood, Maureen O’Hara, John Payne. When a nice old man who claims to be Santa Claus is institutionalized as insane, a young lawyer decides to defend him by arguing in court that he is the real thing. Young Natalie Wood’s performance as the kid who doesn’t believe in Santa helps make this film a classic.

Favorite scene: The courtroom when Kris Kringle testifies. Memorable quote: “I believe… I believe… It’s silly, but I believe.”

3. “A Christmas Story” (1983) directed by Bob Clark starring Peter Billingsley, Melinda Dillon, Darren McGavin. In the 1940s, a young boy named Ralphie attempts to convince his parents, his teacher and Santa that a Red Ryder BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift. This movie makes me laugh out loud.

Favorite scene: When Mother Parker dresses Ralphie’s little brother up in the oversized snow suit and sends him to school.  Memorable quote: “Are you kidding? Stick my tongue to that stupid pole? That’s dumb!”

4. “Love Actualy”(2003) directed by Richard Curtis starring Hugh Grant, Martine McCutcheon, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth, Emma Thompson, Alan Rickman, Keira Knightley, Bill Nighy. Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England. Star-studded cast adds to this bittersweet, feel-good Rom-Com.

Favorite scene: When the Prime Minister goes looking for Natalie in her neighborhood and knocks on the door of her family’s home. Memorable quote (song): “I feel it in my fingers. I feel it in my toes…”

5. “The Holiday” (2006) directed by Nancy Meyers starring Jude Law, Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black. Story of two women troubled with guy-problems who swap homes in each other’s countries, where they each meet a local guy and fall in love. Another feel-good Christmas Rom-Com.

Favorite scene: When Amanda drags her suitcase up the snow-covered dirt road to the cottage. Memorable quote: “It’s Christmas Eve and we are going to go celebrate being young and being alive.”
