What I Learned From The “Sound of Music”

Since my childhood, I’ve watched The Sound of Music so many times that I can sing every song without missing a beat. For me, it isn’t just a film. It is a beloved companion, a comforting ritual, and a lens through which I learned about courage, love, and joy.

When those first notes of the overture swell, something stirs in me. I’m instantly transported back to my young self entranced by Maria spinning on that Austrian hillside.

At its heart, The Sound of Music is a beautiful love story — but not just the romance between Maria and Captain von Trapp. It’s also a love story about family, about music, and about standing up for what matters when the world feels dangerous and uncertain.

A Fairytale With Shadows

As a child, I was captivated by the fairytale elements: the grand mansion, the ballgowns, the candlelit parties, and the idea of falling in love in a moonlit garden. As an adult, I see the shadows that run alongside the joy: the political tension, the looming threat of Nazi occupation, and the courage it took for this family to walk away from everything they knew.

When I was young, though, it was the music that hooked me. Every song felt like a friend. “Do-Re-Mi” was an invitation to play, “My Favorite Things” a recipe for chasing away fear. “Edelweiss” — which I didn’t realize then was an anthem of love for a homeland — made me feel wistful long before I understood why.

And “Climb Ev’ry Mountain,” sung with quiet ferocity by the Mother Abbess, was a powerful reminder that life was meant to be lived in pursuit of something bigger, something braver.

The act of singing along felt freeing, like Maria leading the children through the hills, voices rising in harmony. In those moments, I was part of the von Trapp family chorus, racing through meadows, ducking behind abbey walls, and standing strong at that music festival as the world shifted.

What Love Is

Looking back, The Sound of Music also shaped my early ideas about love. The romance between Maria and the Captain wasn’t flashy or instant. It grew out of respect, shared values, and a willingness to see each other differently.

At first, he was stern and she was irreverent — a pairing doomed to clash. But slowly, with music as the bridge, they found tenderness. Their dance in the garden showed love can surprise you, arrive unannounced, and change the course of your life. And even though it was a movie moment, it felt real.

Perhaps most of all, The Sound of Music taught me that beauty and hardship often exist side by side. For every sunlit picnic, there is a shadow creeping in from the edge of the frame. Yet the von Trapps’ story insists that we don’t have to be defined by fear — that we can choose love, integrity, and family even when it costs us something.

I may not have grasped the political stakes as a child, but I understood, that the family’s escape over the mountains was an act of bravery as profound as any fairy tale quest.

Quiet Resilience

The Sound of Music speaks to every stage of life. As a child, I saw adventure and romance. As a young adult, I recognized longing and transformation. And now, I see resilience — the quiet kind, the kind you carry into uncertain days with a song in your heart because you know it’s the only way forward.

I still sing the songs, sometimes in the shower or driving in my car when the mood strikes. They remind me of who I was, who I’ve become, and the enduring truth at the center of the film: life will always bring its storms, but there is joy to be found, love to be chosen, and mountains to climb.
