Well, it's almost fall y'all and you know what that means. Conferences! Two very important ones for healthcare facility planning, design, and construction, in fact.

If you haven't made plans to attend either of these events yet, here's some information that may help you decide.

Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo, September 24-26, Austin, Tex.

Produced by JD Events, the industry's first conference dedicated to healthcare design is still going strong after 38 years, although it has changed and evolved to focus its educational programming and exhibits more on facility planning, construction, and operations and less on design.

  • Opening keynote: Dr. Esmaeil Porsa, President and CEO Harris Health System.
  • Tours: Texas Children's Hospital, North Austin Campus; Medical Park Tower in Ascension Seton Medical Center.
  • More than 92 conference sessions, networking events, design solutions presentations, etc.
  • Over 110 exhibitors.
  • CEUs: IDCEC, AIA, EDAC.
  • Grand opening of the exhibit floor and Symposium Party.
  • Breakfast (3) and lunch (2).
  • Full access pass for employees of healthcare providers is $1,445; $1,845 for AEC firms and others. Facility tours are an additional $135. Daily passes are $1,045.

Healthcare Design Conference + Expo, October 5-8, Indianapolis, Ind.

Produced by Emerald Expositions with the AIA Academy of Architecture for Health and other partner associations, the healthcare design industry's largest conference is in its 21st year.

It's so big that you don't always see everyone you know who's there unless you make a special effort to meet up. And there are usually more interior designers at HCD than the Symposium, if that matters to you.

All the educational sessions, tours, awards programs, networking events, and exhibits offered at this event can be a bit overwhelming, but I guess that could be said of either of these conferences.

  • Opening keynote: Cassie Holmes, Professor, UCLA Anderson School of Management and author of "Happier Hour: How to Beat Distraction, Expand Your Time, and Focus on What Matters Most."
  • Tours: Eskenazi Health Center Grande: Community Health Center; Franciscan Health Orthopedic Hospital, Carmel; Indiana University School of Medicine Medical Education and Research Building; NeuroDiagnostic Institute and Advanced Treatment Center; Ascension Health St. Vincent Hospital, Women and Infant's Hospital.
  • More than 110 educational sessions.
  • Over 100 exhibitors.
  • CEUs: IDCEC, AIA, EDAC, Continuing Nursing Education.
  • Welcome Reception in Expo Hall; Networking Party at the Indiana State Museum.
  • Breakfast (3) and lunch (3).
  • Register before September 14 and get a full conference pass for $1,899 or a daily pass for $1,499. After that the prices go up $100. Tours cost extra.

One More Thing

If you are going to HCD, please join Sheila Cahnman and I for a presentation titled, "Trend or Fad? Anticipating Changes That Will Have the Greatest Impact on Healthcare Design" on Monday at 9:30 a.m. We'll be looking at design innovations over the past 20+ years that have had a lasting impact, as well as the ones that have faded.

Great question, Sara -
It’s a no brainer where I will be going.
You’ve done a beautiful job in comparing
these two events. Since HCD will be different
this year, it’ll be interesting to hear from
those who attended both events, what
their take on the performance of
these events really turned out
to be. Thanks, always, for
doing what you do.

Thanks for your comment, Wayne! Honestly, I don't expect HCD to be that much different this year. Sure, the presence of The Center for Health Design will be missed, but I think the programming will be just as strong as before. We will see...
